During a recent stint on a low-carb, low-sugar diet I was forced to give up the old sports gels, sports drinks and energy bars associated with endurance sports. They can aid training and recovery in both a nutritional as well as psychological way, but because they are packed with stuff on my "do not eat on pain of death" list I needed something else to keep me going on those long hot rides.
